Swimmers are streamlined, and have developed hairs on their tails, which provide propulsion.

Burrowers, which are also effective swimmers, have evolved with tusks for digging. They excavate a circular tunnel in the soft bottoms of lakes and streams, and venture out of their tunnels only under protection of darkness.

Clingers have evolved with very flattened bodies and stout legs, which allow them to cling tenaciously to rocks in fast current. Some species have even evolved with ventral gills that work like suction cups to hold them securely to a rock.

Crawlers are a diverse group. With strong legs and limited swimming ability, they are best adapted to browsing along the bottom on rocks and plant.
